Artist to Watch For: Kany Garcia
Two-time Latin Grammy winner and Billboard Magazine "Latin Breakthrough Artist of the Year" Kany Garcia is back with her sophomore album.
Born and raised in Toa Boja, Puerto Rico to native Puerto Rican Sheila and Spanish priest Antonio, 27-year-old Encarnita Garcia de Jesus, or Kany Garcia as we know her, is a classically trained singer/songwriter. With a multitude of awards and recognitions (she’s won two Latin Grammys, two Billboard Awards and been named “Latin Breakthrough Artist of the Year” by Billboard Magazine) Kany Garcia is an artist to watch for.
As the youngest of three children growing up in a musical household, Kany started learning about classical music when she was just a small child. She studied cello, theory, solfeggio and chorus before entering Escuela Libre de Musica at age 13, where she discovered her love of the guitar. From that point forward Kany continued to pursue her passion until it lead her to talks with top record label Sony BMG.
By May of 2007 her first single (which was written by the singer/songwriter) “Hoy Ya Me Voy” was released from her debut album Cualquier Dia. The single was largely successful peaking at number 22 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs charts. The song later peaked within the top 10 across four countries and even reached top charts in other countries around the world. The success of her single and album lead to a total of four nominations in the 2008 Latin Grammys, including Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Album, both of which she won.
After the success of her first album, Kany is back to give it another try. Her sophomore album Boleto de Entrada was released in the US yesterday on Sony BMG. The 12-track album includes collaborations with reggaetonero Tego Calderon (he’s featured on her track “El Feo”) and Mexican singer/composer Reyli Barba. Wanna hear the songs before you buy them? Listen to the album for free on her website. My suggestions – download “Feliz” and “Eres Tu”.
