Brittany Bosco’s Soulful History

Brittany Bosco’s Soulful History

I've been chasing Brittany Bosco down for a while; over the past few months she's has been around the world ... literally. Fresh off of her European tour, Brittany Bosco and I got deep about the essence and the importance of music.

“I’m just a girl from the country”—the historical city of Savannah, Ga. to be exact—it’s no wonder why Brittany Bosco’s so deeply invested in her roots. “If you don’t do your research and study the people that came before you, people that gave you a way and a foundation, who are you?“ Her foundation? Sarah Vaughn. Nat King Cole. Billie Holiday. “My music is a fusion of my personality ... I don’t want to box myself in terms of my music and my sound as far as one genre of music. I think you limit yourself as an artist, and an individual, if you do.“ Bosco doesn’t hesitate to say that she’s not necessarily inspired by a lot of what’s on the radio right now, “I just think that a lot of peple aren’t true to music as an art. A lot of people just go by a formula to get a No. hit,“ she says. Bosco says she’s about creating timeless music, the music that she’s inspired by and that inspires others.

The thing about blues and soul music is emotion, you feel the emotion through the music and in the singer’s voice. You would never guess her age by the soul and anguish that effortlessly pours out of her. “I’m only 23 but, I feel like I’ve done my part as a songwriter—as a singer to study the people that came before me.“ Make no mistake, all that research and studying doesn’t mean that she’s a clone of singers past; rather, she’s genre-bending and sound-fusing “with a soulful foundation but, don’t ever say it’s neo-soul.“

“I’m a child of jazz and a little bit of blues
Dibble and dabble of funk down in my shoes
I’m a child of grass and the nature knows me
so I pick red and blue berries from the tree
I just wanna sing nothing so fancy
And to hear my music play in the crowd
I just wanna live like in the 20s
to sit around the jukebox looking at the band play

Can we go back?“

Her first time performing overseas, Bosco took her old-school sound all across Western Europe this fall. “At the end of the day the universal language in America, around the world, is music. That’s what I learned and that’s what I’ve taken from that tour.“ Performing in front of loving audiences from London to Paris, and Cologne to Vienna, where Bosco brought the soul out of Vienna’s beautiful Volkstheater, Bosco says, “It was one of the most amazing things. It just showed me as a person, and as an artist, that at the end of the day language is not a barrier. It’s all about the music.“

In her second EP Spectrum, which was just re-released in September as Spectrum 2.0, Bosco cohesively laces funk guitars with Coltrane-esque trumpets and juke joint basslines. She’s got a solid team behind her from her manager Fadia Kader to The BIG UP, the collective that Bosco formed with Alex Goose, Branden Collins and Omar Ferrer. Established about a year ago, the four met at Savannah College of Art and Design; they’re artists that believe in clean and clear design and every member contributed to Spectrum, from the music down to the packaging design. That trend continues with Bosco’s upcoming album, Black.

Bosco has her eyes set on mid-January for Black’s release, which she promises will be “back to the true essence of rock ‘n’ roll. Singing like it hurts—like Tina [Turner].“ Her album release will bring another tour (both domestic and overseas) in April. Beyond that, Bosco just wants her music to be heard and spark inspiration. “I like to paint pictures of moments in my life in words and create an atmosphere for people to feel like they can do what they want.“ She pauses, as if writing a verse in her head and says, “Nothing is ever too hard to do if you are determined to do that ... Just know that you don’t have to compromise.“
