Designer Spotlight: Iran Ortiz of Endless Noise

inCOLOR: How did you get started designing jewelry?
Iran Ortiz: I started designing jewelry as a hobby a couple of years ago. I walked into a jewelry supply store, brought a bunch of supplies and just taught myself how to make pieces. I would wear them out and give some pieces away to my friends on their b-days. Next thing I knew people wouldn’t stop asking me, “Where did you get that?”
inCOLOR: Is this a full-time job for you?
Iran Ortiz: Yes, it is now a full-time job for me. After being laid off I decided to just go ahead and turn my talent into a business.
inCOLOR: What inspires the jewelry you design?
Iran Ortiz: Music inspires me. I always picture an artist on stage and what would look hot on them.
inCOLOR: Do you have a typical person in mind when you design?
Iran Ortiz: No particular person but it’s mostly an up-and-coming music artist.
inCOLOR: Our favorite piece is your “Duo Necklace Set.” How did you come up with the idea for that?
Iran Ortiz: That’s actually my favorite piece, too. Well, it all started with the “Dolce Necklace.” Though it is a nice piece, I still felt like it wasn’t mine. It was a heart that was already made that I purchased from the jewelry supply store. So, I wanted to make a heart necklace that defined who I was: something that sparkles and catches everyone’s eyes. I had a heart designed out of Plexiglas and glued Swarovski rhinestones on it; that’s when the “Grandioso” was designed. Then I wanted something that represented friendships. I was inspired by the old-school friendship necklace and decided to break the heart apart.
inCOLOR: Do you hand-make your pieces? If so, what materials do you typically use?
Iran Ortiz: I hand-make all of my pieces with love. It’s something that actually keeps me relaxed. I usually use chains. I’m now adding more Plexiglas and Swarovski stones because I actually enjoy how the three elements look together.
inCOLOR: How did you go from just making jewelry to selling it?
Iran Ortiz: My friends would always tell me to sell my pieces. I just never had the time when I was working 9 to 5. After I got laid off, I had all the time in the world to design, sell, and promote my pieces.
inCOLOR: How many hours per day do you put into making jewelry?
Iran Ortiz: It depends on the amount of orders. It varies from one hour to eight hours.
inCOLOR: What is the hardest part of starting your own business?
Iran Ortiz: The hardest part is trying to balance [public relations], sales, and designing. But once you learn how to do it, it’s a breeze.
inCOLOR: What advice do you have for any budding jewelry designers?
Iran Ortiz: Wear your pieces everywhere you go. Have your girls wear them too. You would be surprised at what it does for sales.
InCOLOR: What is your goal for your company?
Iran Ortiz: The goal of my company is provide women with trendy accessories they can wear to with any casual or dressy outfit and is sure to be different from what other girls are wearing.
inCOLOR: If you could sum up the concept of your line in three words, what would they be?
Iran Ortiz: Eye catching pieces.
