Designer Spotlight: Natalia Sanz
If you know D.C. fashion, then you are already familiar with Natalia Sanz. In the midst of preparing for several upcoming shows, Sanz took time out with inCOLOR to discuss her inspirations, favorite designers, and upcoming events.
inCOLOR: What was the inspiration for your Spring 2010 collection?
NS: My collection was inspired by my muse, the modern woman. My collection features garments that are sophisticated and modern.
inCOLOR: Who is your ideal customer?
NS: My ideal customer is a woman who seeks versatility in her wardrobe. She loves classic styles with a modern twist. She is confident, happy, independent, and is always on the go.
inCOLOR: Do you have any advice for upcoming designers?
NS: Have a defined plan for your business before you start and be ready to work, work, work!
inCOLOR: You also design jewelry. How does the process of jewelry design compare to the process of designing clothing?
NS: The process for jewelry design is a lot more simple than clothing design. Jewelry design consists of designing and constructing. Clothing design includes designing, pattern making, sample making, cutting, sewing, and finishing.
inCOLOR: Were you always interested in fashion design?
NS: I was interested in fashion since about fifth grade and chose to follow my passion.

inCOLOR: Some people think that fashion is only for the superficial. What would you say to those people?
NS: Fashion is not for the superficial—it is for everyone. Clothes and accessories are an extension of the person; they allow him or her to express themselves. Clothes can make a person confident, happy, and secure with themselves, thus making them happier in general.
inCOLOR: Who are some designers who you look up to?
NS: I look up to Versace, Valentino, Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera, and Oscar de la Renta.
inCOLOR: If you could choose any three models to walk in your show, who would you chose?
NS: Chanel Iman, Isabeli Fontana, and Gisele Bundchen.
inCOLOR: Do you have any upcoming fashion shows?
NS: Yes, Nova Fashion Week on March 21 at 5 p.m. I will be debuting my fall/winter 2010 collection.
inCOLOR: Where can people buy your apparel?
NS: I will be selling my spring 2010 collection at Crystal Couture on Feb. 1 through 6. Visit my web site to view styles and contact me for more information.
