This spring, designers like Versace, Elie Saab, Donna Karan, BCBG and other brilliant designers were inspired by one of the largest empires in history. The inspiration was the toga, orginally worn by Romans starting in 1200BC.

More than 3,000 years ago, non-Romans and women couldn’t wear the traditional toga dress. The toga was a 20-foot cloth wrapped around the body over a tunic. In time, Romans adopted the tunica from Greeks because it was easier to move around in, especially in time of war when men needed to move more freely. Women’s traditional dress was the stola, which is the equivalent of the toga. The only difference between the two was that the women’s costume had sleeves. Women who wore togas at the time were considered prostitutes.

Three millennia later, we have the freedom to wear either one without being Roman while looking fashionable and comfortable as well.

BCBG had a number of dazzling draped dresses on the runway this season. The designer had short, long, twisted, short sleeves and sleeveless draped dresses in the collection. Colors that dominated the BCBG were, gray, orange, red and black. The fabrics used were mostly jersey and satin.
