Jamaal Sabree: A Blessing Sent Through Song
At 18 years old, Jamaal Sabree knows exactly where he's destined to be — at the top. The Christian emcee hailing from Oceanside, Calif., is gaining popularity through his positive music and high-energy performances. Look inside as Jamaal answers some questions that reveal the inspiration behind his music.
During times when it’s become the norm for rap artists to use foul language, glorify selling and using drugs, and explicitly disrespect women, those who spit raps on the subjects of religious faith, being encouraged and abiding by morals are a rare breed.
But make way for a new era.
At a youthful yet mature 18 years of age, Jamaal Sabree has come a long way from the days when his nerves got in the way of him giving a knockout performance. Now, it’s all about giving God all the glory when on stage — and the loyal fan base he’s drawn throughout San Diego can’t get enough.
A role model to youngsters, Jamaal has graced many with his music, starting at his old stomping grounds of El Camino High School in Oceanside, Calif., at his church, Shiloh Church of God in Christ, and other congregations throughout the area, as well as at the Kuumba Fest — an annual celebration of African-American expression.
Pretty soon the whole world will know who Jamaal is, as he’s making his presence known with his positive music, his unmatched dancing ability and his own YouTube channel showcasing his skills as a budding actor and Christian rapper. When he’s not sketching, designing fresh kicks and tees, and dabbling on the keyboard and drums, Jamaal is busy writing music and making beats — diligently working toward his goal of becoming a household name. Most recently, he landed a gig sharing the stage with So. Cal emcee Rob Grimes, who is opening up for Atlanta rapper T.I. during his Farewell Tour on Tuesday, March 17 at the San Diego Sports Arena.

What makes you stand out as an artist?
The one who makes me stand out as an artist I believe is God; sensing his presence every performance makes me want to give it my all and do my best, and I believe that God plays the No.-1 role in that.
What’s the driving force behind your music?
The thing that led me to becoming a Christian rapper was me rapping about other things I had no clue about from the get-go, because I believe that God had something better for my life and I had to go through that phase of negative rap to get to a more positive and truthful rap. God really touched my heart at the right time and the right place, and truly changed my life around through my music.
What’s the message you’re trying to get out through your music?
It’s a range of things. Most of the time it is stuff I have been through and it’s me motivating the audience to do their best and not go down the same path. It could be lustful thinking, jealousy, always being bitter, et cetera, but the main focus is letting them know who Jesus Christ really is and what He has to offer.
Tell me what it’s like rockin’ a live show.
The feeling of performing in front a bunch of hyped up kids is words I can’t explain — it is one of the greatest feelings ever. It makes me want to just give God thanks and not stop because of the opportunities He has opened. It’s a greater feeling when those kids know your song and they’re screaming it back while you’re rapping to them and mainly to God.
What’s your favorite song you’ve written and why?
It’s called “Nope Nope.“ I love it because it has such a powerful message behind it. It talks about how sometimes the enemy will try to bring you down, but if you have Christ in your life, He will sure enough bring you back up because of the fact that He watches and He sees what we are going through. If we lean toward him He will sure enough make a way out of no way. That’s basically the moral of the song “Nope Nope.“
Where do you think your music will take you?
I know my music is going to take me to far places because I believe that God is going to bless me and use me through my music to touch others. Like my pastor would always say, “He doesn’t want to just bless you — He wants to bless you to be a blessing.“ I know that he will take me to high and low places just so I can minister to different people.
Name some of the musicians/artists/people who you aspire to be like.
Some of the artists I look up to is this Christian rapper named Lecrae, Will Smith, John Legend, but the one I most look up to is my brother, Rob Grimes, because of the way he works and how humble he is, how through every accomplishment he thanks God and even before every accomplishment he thanks God. How he’s at a nonstop hustle to try and get where he is going just inspires me to do the same.

Stay encouraged. It doesn’t matter what you go through, just stay faithful, encouraged and joyful, because if you let someone take your joy from you, you will become bitter and angry, and that is not how life should be lived. I also want to say if you have dreams, don’t stop until you get there. Don’t let no one tell you, you can’t or you won’t make it. If Jamie Foxx made it through people telling him he can’t, then you can. If Will Smith made it through people saying he can’t, then you can. If Muhammad Ali made it through people saying he can’t, then trust me, you definitely can, so stay encouraged and go for it.
