In these hard times, is it worth spending all your money to keep up with the trends? For me if you got it, flaunt it, if not, look like you do.
Companies like H&M and Target get that everyone can’t afford to buy the designers duds so they make sure you can get it. Target started it all with their Go International lines where they bring in the biggest designers to create fashionable pieces that are afforable. Luella Bartley, Paul&Joe, Rodarte, Botiker, Thakoon, Sigerson&Morrison, Hayden Harnett, Jonathan Saunders, Richard Chai, Rogan, Jovovich Hawk, Erin Fetherson and most recently Alexander McQueen jumped on the band wagon.
These top designers are creating luxury pieces at a affordable prices which retails under a $100. Isaac Mizrahi and Liz Lange were the first well-known designers who teamed up with Target. It didn’t stop there because Target called on the beauty industry’s top makeup artists and hair stylists to create luxury beauty products for less. Sonia Kashuk, Marcia Kilgore, JK by Jemma Kidd, Pixi by Petra, NP Set by Napoleon Perdis, Umberto Savone, Soap&Glory and Boots were some of the well known lines in the beauty industry that teamed up with Target. It is like your one-stop shop getting designer beauty products, shoes, clothes and bags at a good deal. H&M called on designers and celebrities to create fashion pieces for less also. In 2007, H&M collaborated with Madonna and launched the M by Madonna collection during her Confessions Tour. Viktor&Rolf, Roberto Cavalli, Stella McCartney, Karl Lagerfield, Comme des Garcons and most recently Matthew Williamson, whose line will hit the store April 23, created a line for H&M. These lines have pieces that range from $50 to $400, and to me that’s not bad for luxury. What’s so good about these lines, is the clothing doesn’t look cheap and depending on how it is styled, you can make a $50 dress look like $500.
I am an “in-between spender,“ meaning I will spend money on designer pieces and pair them with cheap pieces. No one needs to know the label you are wearing unless you tell them. Keep in mind, it is not what you wear but how you wear it.
Here are a few tips that you can use to live like luxury:
1.) Stores like Century 21, Filene’s Basement and Marshalls sell designers pieces but the only thing is you have to really search through racks to find it.
2.) Bags Borrow or Steal is an online store where you can rent designer bags like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Tory Burch, Chanel and many more for as long as you want.
3.) Zappos and DSW are the top places where you can buy designer shoes, bags and clothes for less. I found some Marc Jacobs shoes on Zappos that were $299 and they were retailing for $425 in a department store. Sometimes it is good to shop around before spending your last dime on designer wear.
