Nat’s Turn at the Remix Table
The estate of Nat King Cole and producers such as will-i-am and Ce-Lo attempt to bring Cole's music into the modern era, however, they fall a bit short.
Over the last few years, one way for classic artists to get airplay and attention from a new generation is to have their hits remixed into newer musical genres. Some of these efforts are complements, others are deterrents. This week Re:Generations gives some hits of jazz legend Nat King Cole the remix treatment. This album is sadly more deterrent than complementary.
The mixes do serve two good purposes. First of all, they add a much needed punch to very mellow and sometimes bland Cole songs. Secondly, quite a few tracks would be great additions to runway shows, in-store soundtracks and wine and cheese parties. I especially note Ce-Lo Green’s and Will-I-Am’s respective remixes Lush Life and Straighten Up and Fly Right as well as Souldiggaz version of Hit That Jive, Jack and Bitter:Sweet’s More and More of Your Amor. Cut Chemist’s Day-In-Day Out also warrants a listen.
However, other tracks try too hard to make Cole relevant. One even incorporates AutoTune effects. The line is supposed to be a swipe at T-Pain, but falls flat. Many incorporate raps and extra vocalists that take the songs too far off their original essence. One key example is the Roots remix Walkin’ My Baby Back Home. The song starts off much like the original song it remixes, with the original ending. However, after a brief fade out, Black Thought appears with his own rhyme on top of a sample of the original beat. While the concept of the remix was good, the splicing of it with the original was jarring. The songs were better served as separate songs.
Over all, listen to/download tracks one through five and then seven and then cut the rest out. Then, wait for the next “remix” album from a classic artist. Hopefully, it will be all complementary.
