She’s Got Style: Rowshana Jackson
Stylist Rowshana Jackson recently took time out to talk to inCOLOR about how stylists operate, and her personal style. She was also kind enough to provide us with her own guide to style for both men and women.
Rowshana Jackson has had her hands in all aspects of the styling industry. She has done commercial work for companies such as Virgos Denim and editorial work for Wrought Style. Her path to becoming a stylist started in fashion school. After she realized that she didn’t want to be a designer, she decided to take a different approach to fashion by becoming a personal shopper. Jackson’s work as a personal shopper led to her career as a stylist.

Jackson is definitely skilled at what she does and was able to answer some questions that we thought inCOLOR readers may have about the job of a fashion stylist. Have you ever wondered how fashion stylists get all the clothes for photo shoots? According to Jackson, “A good stylist must always maintain a stock of several vintage and trendy pieces.” In order to do this, stylists must borrow clothing, pull pieces from PR companies, rent pieces, and purchase them as well.
She also noted the importance of creating and developing relationship with designers to a stylist’s success. For those interested in becoming a fashion stylist, Jackson advises that it is important to be actively involved in the fashion industry. Up-and-coming stylists should always be in search of more experience and knowledge. Passion is a must for Jackson, who also cautions newcomers not to be afraid of creative criticism.
“In order to make it as a stylist you must eat and shit fashion,” Jackson adds. She notes that the hardest aspect of her job as a stylist is waiting.
“Waiting holds up creativity,” Jackson says.

To Jackson, the difference between being fashionable and having style is that, “style is innate, being fashionable is influenced.” Jackson describes her personal style as “vintage with an edge.” She explains that she tends to dress in multifunctional clothing because she’s always on the go. Her fabric of choice is denim and loves wearing basic black because “it’s sleek and classic.” Jackson’s favorite item of clothing that she owns is a vintage brocaded turquoise jacket with black satin lapels reminiscent of the character, Ducky, from the movie “Pretty in Pink.”

Every stylist in New York City loves Topshop. My personal favorites are Zara and the online store ASOS.com. They are all great stores and reasonably prices.
