Canadian TV star Aubrey Graham is all grown up, jumping from in front of the cameras to in front of the mic. Now going by his middle name Drake, the former Degrassi star is making a name for himself in the studio.

Underground hip-hop fans may be familiar with Drake’s mixtapes; he’s released three since 2006. Room for Improvement, Comeback Season, and most recently So Far Gone portray the former actor’s rhyming skills. Released in February 2009, So Far Gone features 18 tracks centered on distancing oneself from negative forces and as he says, “elevating past the bull”.

Drake’s efforts to be respected as a serious hip-hop artist are backed by an all-star support team. In addition to opening for Lil Wayne at a recent concert, rapper Lupe Fiasco and R&B singer Cassie can be heard on some of his tracks. His first single, “Replacement Girl,“ from Comeback Season features R&B artist Trey Songz and is currently vying for a spot on BET’s “106th & Park.“

Drake is currently working on his debut album. Titled Thank Me Later, the album is slated to be released in either late 2009 or early 2010 under Interscope Records. The album will contain singles previously heard on his mixtapes in addition to new material.

A bit after his hit single the “Best I Ever Had” the song “Let’s call it off” became what I like to call an artist confirmation track. The marvelous remake that Drake gives us diversifies Drake’s image. Whether you think Peter Bjorn’s & John Alternative pop version was better left alone, Drake’s ft. Peter Bjorn collaboration made a louder sound. Either or created space for hip hop and other genres to simply make music we ALL can bump our heads to.
